Great Ideas for Sewing Machine Tables
The dining room table has always been the heart of creative activity in my house, just like when I was young and living in my mom and dad’s house. I can remember being ten years old, bent over at the head of the maple-wood dining table and sewing away on my Mother’s Elna.
As a sewing machine table, the elongated rectangle (or oval) form is the right match. Today, my machine sits on the edge of a long side of my dining table which supports the bulk of a quilt – my main sewing activity. It also has plenty of room for equipment so I’m not constantly getting up and down. To the side of my chair is a TV table for a small ironing station. I can happily sew for hours with this set up.
However, there are still households who use their dining room table for eating on a daily basis (imagine that!). Shifting the contents of a sewing project for each meal, or even for one meal would not be practical and so an alternative should be found.
Buy a Sewing Machine Cabinet
Thankfully, there is plenty of sewing machine tables available created in the functional and convenient form of a cabinet. Sewing machine cabinets include drawers and shelves for supply storage in addition to a spot for the machine on top. Some cabinets allow the machine to be lowered through a lift mechanism and kept beneath when not in use.
Design Your Own Sewing Center
Do you have a folding table? You know…one of those rectangular and thick plastic ones you can purchase inexpensively at stores like Coscto? If you have enough room, this is a suitable and sturdy substitute to a dining room table or sewing machine cabinet. Plastic drawers on wheels can be used for accessories and rolled underneath the table when not in use.
